American Studies Minor

The field: The American Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program in the study of U.S. culture, including history, art, literature, philosophy, politics, religion, science, and so on. The American Studies minor brings together scholarship in a number of fields to give students a broad view of U.S. society from a variety of perspectives, with particular attention to the problems of a diverse, pluralistic nation in an interdependent world.

The Minor: A minor in American Studies consists of 25 hours of course work in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. At least 15 hours must be at or above the 300 level. The single course required for the American Studies minor is Comparative Studies 234, American Icons.

In addition, students must take twenty elective credits chosen from a list of selected courses offered by the Department of Comparative Studies, the Departments of History, English, African American and African Studies, History of Art, Philosophy, Theatre, Music, Rural Sociology, Political Science, City and Regional Planning, Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology.

Elective courses must be distributed to include at least one in the general area of cultural expression (e.g., art, literature, folklore, philosophy) and one in the general area of social problems or the social sciences (e.g., politics, history, women's studies).

Specific courses that can be counted toward the minor in American Studies are listed below.
