COMPSTD 4444: The Sustainability Games is all about "serious" games: games that go beyond mere entertainment and veer into learning-by-playing.
Focusing our academic journey on sustainability-themed tabletop games — en route to creating their own — students and their fellow players are being challenged all semester to deconstruct, assess, and envision a reality where everyone has a seat at the table both now and in the future. At the end of the semester, they will present their semester group project in a public forum, sharing prototypes of their sustainability-themed tabletop game.
We invite members of the general public, including boardgaming enthusiasts, to attend this forum and hear student groups’ pitches, provide feedback, and help assess their work, which should include:
- how their games represented sustainability concerns (expected learning outcomes; connections to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the OSU Sustainability Institute's dimensions of sustainability)
- narrative and character development
- the economy of their game (currency tokens)
- gameboard landscape
- description of the rules
- how a player/team "wins"
Refreshments provided. Please RSVP at this link, which will be open until November 30th (or until we have reached max capacity).
