COMPSTD 8791: Phenomenology of Embodiment and the Senses is a graduate seminar that approaches the/a/your body as a prism through which the world is experienced to theorize how perception, the senses, and sensation are constitutive of all that can be known.
Among other questions, the course asks: How might the sonic rupture the preeminence of sight? Can we imagine a philosophy founded on critical listening? What radicality can we revive by attending to the sense-giving of the senses?
In pursuit of these questions, enrolled students present Critical Karaoke: an experimental essay format in which they will deliver very short papers about a song that reflects their broader research interest (while the song plays in the background, each presentation unfolding in a timeframe no longer than the song itself).
Each presentation will:
- Contextualize their research agenda and song for an audience that maybe unfamiliar with both,
- Ground the act and affect of listening in appropriate theory/criticism, and
- Offer an account of their subjective embodied experience of listening.
