Comparative Studies now offers a new Study Abroad Course in Lisbon, Portugal! Taught by our faculty member, Dr. Liliana Gil, COMPSTD 4456 Lived Infrastructures will run May 10-26, 2027, and it carries 3 credits that can be used toward the GE Lived Environments requirement. Here is a description of the course:
What can street art, monuments, transit systems, and neighborhoods tell us about who a city is for?
This interdisciplinary study-abroad course explores the social and political life of infrastructures in postcolonial Lisbon. Students will investigate how the built environment shapes and is shaped by lived experiences of race, gender, class, disability, and migration, and their deep histories. Through site visits, classroom discussions, and collaborative ethnographic projects, the course combines academic study with immersive, place-based learning. We will explore infrastructures as sites where history, power, justice, and citizenship are negotiated, with particular attention to the ways they render certain lives visible or invisible and to grassroots initiatives that imagine alternative urban futures.
