This 2-hour workshop welcomes all graduate students, regardless of College, department, area of specialty, or year in the program. We will begin with a panel discussion with alumni from different points in their career and conclude with an overview of document preparation from the point of view of recruiters and employers. Faculty and staff are also welcome to attend.
Today’s professional landscape, including that outside of Academia, greatly benefits from the skills attained throughout graduate students’ careers. Our panelists will share what they feel they learned during their program and how they presented and leveraged those skills both on the job market and over the course of their ongoing employment. We will also be joined by Maddie Kindig of ASC Career Success, who will help provide resources that attendees may find helpful when drafting cover letters and resumes. Attendees are encouraged to bring a cover letter or resume draft, though this is not required to participate in the workshop.

Dr. Toni Calbert is the Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences where she facilitates faculty development and success for more than 1,600 tenure-track, clinical, teaching, practice, research, and associated faculty. She earned her Ph.D. in African American Literature from the Department of English at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining OSU, she worked as a corporate attorney. She holds a J.D. from Columbia University and B.A. from Harvard University.
Alex McCarthy is President of the Emergency Management Association of Ohio and currently leads the Delaware County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, where he has been Director since March of 2023. Before that, he served as the Director of Tuscarawas County’s emergency management program for nearly six years. Alex’s background is in atmospheric science / meteorology, having received both his undergraduate and masters’ degrees from The Ohio State University.
Dr. Brianne Herrera is the Student Success Analytics and Assessment Specialist in the Office of Institutional Research and Planning. In her role, she leads qualitative and mixed-methods research initiatives to support student success, including the design and leadership of institution-level surveys for incoming and graduating students. Brianne earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology from The Ohio State University, an M.A. in Anthropology from Texas State University, and a B.S. in Astronomy from The University of Texas at Austin.
