Dan DiPiero is a musician and about to start a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, in their Conservatory of Music and Dance. Previously, he taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Musicology at Ithaca College, Miami University (OH), and the Ohio State University, where he earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Comparative Studies in 2019. Dan’s first book, Contingent Encounters: Improvisation in Music and Everyday Life, was published in 2022 by the University of Michigan Press. Other work has been published in Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation, Rancière and Music (Edinburgh University Press), Audimat, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Cleveland Review of Books, Sounding Out!, boundary2online, and soon in Jazz and Culture. Dan founded and currently co-chairs the Music and Sound Studies Working Group at the Cultural Studies Association, and hosts the Public Cultural Studies podcast.
